Validity of the learner’s permit

If the applicant for subcategory D1 already has category C or subcategory C1 and is 21 years of age or older, he does not need a learner’s license and does not have to take a theoretical and practical test. Anyone who acquired C1 under the old law (before April 1, 2003) must complete the additional theory test.
driving experience
A complaint-free driving experience for at least one year regularly with a category B motor vehicle or for at least 3 months regularly and without complaint category C or trolleybus. Subcategory D1 is entered upon request.
learning trips
- Learner’s license required (holders of category C driver’s license do not need a learner’s license for practice drives)
- accompanying person required.
- Learner trips may only be undertaken with a companion who has reached the age of 23 and has held a driver’s license for subcategory D1 for at least three years and is no longer on a probationary basis.
- With the learner driving license of subcategory D1, learner driving on vehicles of category C1 is permitted.
Practice drives: Driving a motor vehicle whose driver does not require a learner driver’s license and which is carried out in preparation for a practical driver’s test. On practice drives with vehicles of subcategory D1, the accompanying person according to Article 15 paragraph 1 SVG, the driving instructor, the traffic expert and other learner drivers may ride along; the driver of the vehicle must carry confirmation of admission to the driving test for subcategory D1.
CZV – the Chauffeur Licensing Ordinance
If you make journeys with subcategory D1 that do not fall under the exceptions of the CZV, you also need the certificate of ability for passenger transport.
